Fed Survey Shows Growth Mostly Modest Across U.S.

Housing construction and home prices grew nationally from late May through Early July. Production of lumber and building materials also increased. While builders started work on fewer homes in June, applications for permits to build single-family houses reached their highest level in five years. Hiring held steady or improved in most district. The economy appears to be growing at a steady pace. Builders started 836,000 homes in June, down from 928,000 in May. Most of the decline came from a slump in apartment construction, which is volatile.
