Builders and Lumber Dealers See Shortages of Key Building Materials

Shortages of lumber, wall board, and other key home building materials have been reported by home builders and lumber dealers. Builders reported shortages most often in oriented strand board, followed by wall board, framing lumber, and plywood. Lumber dealers reported larger shortages of these products, excepting wall board. Shortages were higher than in 2011 or 2012, and have reached levels not seen since 2004 or 2005. More lumber dealers than builders reported price increases in building materials over the past six months, with the exception of concrete and related products; lumber dealers reported an average 10 percent price increase while builders reported an average 5.17 percent increase.
