NBMDA and Habitat for Humanity Form Relationship

NBMDA and Habitat for Humanity have begun a relationship to promote Habitat's ReStores and our shared values of community involvement, housing opportunities and environmental stewardship. Many NBMDA members already support Habitat through local or national partnerships. NBMDA is encouraging all of its members to join the effort by donating materials and products to the Habitat ReStore in their trade area. Habitat promotes the reuse and recycling of materials. The ReStores accept the donated goods, thereby preventing waste and providing funding to continue Habitat's work around the world. Members can also educate their associates and customers about the Habitat Mission of building homes and changing lives in the communities across the nation. For more information on the Habitat relationship, please contact Drew Meyer at dmeyer@habitat.org or 404-420-6762.

Join Habitat for Humanity national project for building industry

Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz is a partnership between Habitat and the building industry, working in partnership with low-income families, to build 250 Habitat houses across the nation. Hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the build industry, including NBMDA members committed to improving their communities, are expected to volunteer to construct, rehabilitate or repair houses during the week-long event.

From a pilot project in North Carolina in 2002 to national builds in 2006 and 2008, Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz set the goal of building 1,000 houses – a goal the organization expects to surpass in the future. Become part of this important national effort to revitalize neighborhoods, support new construction and renovations or repairs, and create affordable housing in partnership with low-income families. Join in the Blitz for Stronger Communities

Habitat for Humanity and Tom Gipson, a Habitat volunteer and professional homebuilder in Raleigh, North Carolina, participated in the 2012 Home Builders Blitz, held June 4-8.

Gipson launched this event with Habitat in Raleigh in 2002, rallying local builders for an accelerated, weeklong build. His efforts were so successful that Habitat decided to promote Home Builders Blitz nationwide.

The first national Home Builders Blitz, held in 2006, resulted in more than 400 new Habitat homes in communities across the country. More than 1,000 builders teamed with 130 Habitat affiliates to provide housing for nearly 2,000 people. The next blitz took place in 2008, when, in spite of the downturn in the building industry, 110 Habitat affiliates partnered with builders to complete 263 homes nationwide. Home Builders Blitz 2012 continued the partnership between Habitat for Humanity and the building industry, with a goal of building, renovating and repairing 250 homes.

Enthusiasm for giving back remains strong. Just as families who move into Habitat homes are thankful, builders and other supporters are uplifted by the experience of working together for the greater good. The weeklong Home Builders Blitz has a proven track record of touching the spirit of everyone involved.

Habitat corporate partners include stalwarts of our industry and North American Building Material Distribution Association (NBMDA) members such as Valspar, which regularly participates in Habitat’s mission. Valspar recently renewed its partnership with Habitat with a pledge of $19 million in funding and product. Dick Seitz, Valpar’s Habitat for Humanity Paint Program coordinator, recently wrote in affirmation of the company’s positive interaction with Habitat:

“Valspar is very proud of our relationship with Habitat for Humanity and pleased to provide the paint in support of the 2012 Home Builders Blitz. Everyone in our industry should take pride in the work being done in this year’s Home Builders Blitz and the important impact it will have on the communities being served.”

Habitat welcomes contributions of cash and materials from manufacturers, distributors and dealers whose involvement drives the success of Home Builders Blitz.
