What role do you see the Internet playing in building material distribution? We believe the Internet is already playing a strong role as an information resource. Almost all of our suppliers, as well as Louis and Company, provide a vast amount of product information on the Internet. We see online ordering growing but at a much slower rate than originally projected prior to the dot-com boom.
In what ways does NBMDA add value to your firm?
NBMDA provides excellent value through the variety of events each year. Most meetings provide a forum to gain a view of where the industry is going and an opportunity to discuss our key issues – accomplished through the roundtable discussions. The meetings also provide a place to network with many of our suppliers and industry colleagues. We’ve also been impressed by the focus the Association has on bringing value to our customers through the Cabinetmaker Magazine publication pieces.
A Customer-Centric Approach to Business:
Our business philosophy is customer-centric. We attribute our growth to understanding our customers’ needs in a unique way and by providing value through our employees. Excellent service is delivering our customers the products they require at the expected time. Behind the scenes, to accomplish this, we have a broad selection of products with depth of inventory along with our network of facilities and a state-of-the-art IT system. We focus a significant amount of time training our employees on products and skills to meet our customers’ demands.
Product Catalog, Inventory Separates Louis and Company:
There are several key differentiators. Louis and Company produces a product catalog every other year. Many customers refer to the Louis and Company catalog as the “bible” of the industry when it comes to products and information. Our complete product catalog is also located on our Web site in an interactive and searchable manner. We deliver orders to our customers with a 98%+ fill rate. This is accomplished through our network of facilities and through the breadth and depth of inventory. Our sales force and marketing activities also reach out to our customers and provide them the service, support and knowledge they require. So our customers come to depend on us as one of their most valued business partners. By working closely with manufacturers, we are first to inform our customers about new products that help them differentiate themselves in their markets and become more productive in their shops.
Bring Value to Customers Through Technology:
Technology has been a strength at Louis and Company. We also believe in a practical approach to investment in technology ensuring that it ultimately brings value to our customers and a return on the investment. We have a state-of-the-art SAP R/3 ERP system that provides an integrated approach to information and processes within the
company. This is the backbone of our IT system that enables us to provide rock-solid service to our customers.
Louis and Company Background Information:
For over 30 years, Louis and Company has been a leading industrial distributor of cabinet hardware, woodworking supplies, surfacing products, coatings and finishes, and machinery to the cabinet shop and furniture-manufacturing industries. The products we distribute include cabinet hardware, abrasives, fasteners, tools, adhesives, high-pressure laminates, coatings and finishes, machinery, and other related merchandise.
Louis and Company was founded in 1975 by Jeff Louis with his first location in Anaheim, CA. Today, Louis and Company maintains multiple branches in California: Brea, San Diego, Fremont, Ventura and Van Nuys. We also have branches throughout the country: Grand Prairie, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Baton Rouge and Denver.
In January 1997, Louis and Company became part of the Wurth Group, a 7+ billion dollar company headquartered in Kunzelsau, Germany. This joint partnership enabled Louis and Company to combine resources with Wurth and set up a national distribution network.
In January 1999, Louis and Company acquired Neuman Supply Company, which carried many of the same major product lines offered by Louis and Company. Neuman Supply Company was based out of Eugene, OR with branches in Portland. A fleet of delivery trucks operating out of these locations permits us to serve a wide geographical area. In October 2004, Louis and Company acquired Machinery Hardware Supply (MHS) of Utah. MHS was a strategic acquisition which provided an immediate, strong presence in both the Utah and Idaho markets.
As a distributor, our goal is to provide our customers with the best possible service. Our growth has allowed us to better serve our customers by offering a large and varied inventory with prompt delivery. The key ingredient, however, is the cooperative effort of all employees working as a team to provide the best service to each and every customer in the most effective manner at all times.
